THE SECRET OF OUR SUCCESS IS SIMPLE

FILTROIL CONCEPT
The secret of our success is not how fast we filter your oil but how thoroughly it is cleaned. Filtroil is a high quality, ultra-fine filtration system operating continuously and exclusively in the bypass mode. By slowly filtering 10% to 20% of a system's oil per operating hour, Filtroil can, over a few weeks, bring the total system up to an oil quality equilibrium with contaminate ingestion rate at a point 2 to 5 grades cleaner than new oil and maintain this system oil quality.

FILTROIL UNIT
Our system delivers the best continuous filtration anywhere in the marketplace. We consistently deliver the highest quality workmanship in all levels of our system. Starting with our 100% cast aluminum housing unit, special attention has been given to the precision machining of all working and visible surfaces. Highly machined areas include tapered sides, a precision interior seating ring, high strength element seating boss and suction release slots.

The interior of the unit contains an element support screen to guarantee a uniform foundation for the element. The multi-ported manifold of extruded aluminum is machined on all six sides and precision drilled and tapped. All other key components, including the high strength steel T-bar and interior assembly knob, are chrome plated to prevent rust and provide easy maintenance.

During the manufacturing and assembly process the entire unit is pressure tested and checked at least three separate times. The Filtroil unit has a burst strength of over five times the maximum operating pressure. The solid cast aluminum housing has excellent thermal properties and, therefore, dissipates oil system heat very rapidly.

All other openings, from the galvanized mounting bracket and mounting bolts to the precision flow control valve, pressure gauges and brass connectors, are also made of the highest quality materials and workmanship. Final cushion packaging ensures the fully assembled Filtroil unit will be delivered safe and fully operational.

FILTROIL ELEMENT
The element consists of 400 yards of finely wound paper (cellulose fiber C6H10O5). This method of filtration is not unique to Filtroil, and has unfortunately been degraded by making reference to the resemblance to a large roll of toilet paper. Filtroil's exacting specifications and features are, however, unique. The high quality paper roll is encased in cardboard with an interior liner to give structural support, and a polypropylene skirt around the base that naturally fills with oil to ensure proper seating and interior element integrity. A specially designed fibrous seating pad provides uniformity across the entire element base.

The element's larger than average surface area provides a substantial initial catchment for particles, while the depth filter enables the element to remove contaminants of various sizes without clogging. Although the medium size element consists of a surface area over 900 square feet, it occupies only a few cubic inches of space. An additional two quarts of oil is all that is required to be added to the entire system after installation of a Filtroil unit.

FILTROIL INSTALLATION
Filtroil units are designed in three standard sizes to accommodate the widest spectrum of equipment. No design changes need to be made to your machinery. By operating in the bypass mode without disturbing, to any degree, the volume or pressure of the primary system, Filtroil can be installed on virtually any piece of industrial equipment.

The unit comes complete with all necessary fittings, hoses and couplings, a unique precision-made flow control valve and a stop valve. Installations are easy, requiring one hour or less.

FILTROIL OPERATION
Operation is extremely user friendly, and elements can be changed in minutes while the machine is in full operation with no tools required. Element removal is facilitated by two clips on every element. After closing the shut-off valve of the unit, a quick spin of the T-bar opens the Filtroil housing for diagnostic inspection of either the filtration process itself, (and potential signs of machine problems) or for a quick element change. The three standard sizes of the Filtroil unit meet the capacity requirements of most equipment.

FILTROIL COST EFFECTIVENESS
The Filtroil system is extremely cost effective to purchase, install and use. The benefits of the overall system pay for its costs in a very short period of time. Depending on the operating hours and conditions, Filtroil elements are changed only 3 to 6 times per year. The sum total of Filtroil (purchase, installation and normal operating expenses) is more than compensated by the significant economic benefits at a variety of levels. Normal total net payback, cash-on-cash, is in the range of 6 to 12 months under the most conservative calculations.

THE CONCEPT OF FILTROIL'S OIL MAINTENANCE SYSTEM

An onboard Filtroil Filtration System, sometimes referred to as slip-stream filtration, is the preferred oil maintenance system by all major North American injection machine manufacturers.

Due to various pressures, circulation volume, and capacity limitations of any given system, full flow filters are limited in their ability to remove small particles while still maintaining proper circulation and pressure. However, Filtroil filtration, used in conjunction with full flow filters, can adapt to nearly any environment and are, therefore, able to remove extremely small particles.

The combination of the Filtroil system, with Filtroil's unique special flow control valve, allows a specific oil flow rate from the high pressure line of the hydraulic system into the compact aluminum housing of the carefully designed and manufactured element. Here the oil is cleaned slowly through very high quality depth filtration, removing both extremely fine particulates and small quantities of water. The clean oil is then returned to the oil tank without loss of system pressure.

Filtroil's bypass unit filters approximately 10% to 20% of a system's oil per operating hour.

By using this method continuously over a few weeks, the total system oil will be upgraded and thereafter maintained at a point of equilibrium with contaminate ingestion (i.e., 2 to 5 grades cleaner than new oil).

In any hydraulic system, close tolerances, critical timing cycles, precise valve operations and expensive components, etc., make high quality oil an absolute must. A few sub-micron particles of dirt can cause a malfunction and shut down an entire assembly line or factory, or lower output quality by sluggish cycling. Accumulations of all particles, even extremely small particles, slowly grind up pumps and cause accelerated system wear.

It is generally understood that approximately 75% of machine and hydraulic problems are directly caused by contaminated oil. Independent oil analysis tests prove that by following our thorough maintenance system, Filtroil can clean and continuously maintain your oil at or approaching ISO level 14/12 or better, (that's 2 to 5 grades cleaner than new oil!). As a frame of reference, the Filtroil unit removes about 1 lb. of dirt and moisture from an oil system every operating quarter, even with all in-line filter systems in place and functioning. Naturally, the superb filtration capability extends the oil's useful life. In addition, Filtroil extends the life of additive packages by removing down to sub-micron particles, but leaving all additives (in solution or up to 1/100 micron) in the oil. As a result, Filtroil can eliminate problems of today and prevent those of tomorrow.

In this age of precision technology, hydraulic machinery users deserve a hydraulic oil cleaning system that enables their machinery to operate at top notch efficiency to save time, money and energy. The Filtroil system provides the most cost effective and long-term oil contamination control available.

HOW FILTROIL SOLVES OIL CONTAMINATION PROBLEMS

The four major causes of hydraulic oil deterioration are:

  • Particulate Contamination
  • Moisture Contamination
  • Acid Build-up
  • Oxidation

These four causes of hydraulic oil deterioration create contaminated oil and viscosity fluctuation, which in turn creates the need for frequent oil changes and/or cleaning. Failure to address these issues results in a myriad of mechanical and operational problems.

PARTICULATE CONTAMINATION
Particulates enter the system in a variety of ways. The four main sources are:

  • Impurities in new oil and contaminants introduced when new oil is added to the system.
  • Exterior pollutants and moisture in air entering via the breather caps.
  • Particulates entering through seals, along the rams and other moving components.
  • Wear of internal components generating multiple and geometric growth of particulates.

Filtroil's filtering capability is a combination of high contaminant retention capacity and a steady, slow flow rate. The low flow rate filtering procedure, supplemented with the pressure of the oil from the top of the element, ensures continuous filtration removing silt which because of its size (1–5 microns) is most harmful. This most neglected form of contamination in hydraulic oil is ultra-fine dirt, undetectable by sight, which interacts with moving surfaces causing abrasive wear.

MOISTURE CONTAMINATION
Moisture contamination is derived from condensation, and is normally only a few ounces of water. The Filtroil element will absorb normal moisture levels of 4 to 19 oz., depending on size and type of element, maintaining the amount of water less than 0.03% by volume.

Abnormally large quantities of water in oil are usually the result of breakdown between the heat exchanger and the hydraulic system or some other catastrophic failure. Although it is not the main purpose of our filtration system, Filtroil does sell specially designed water eater elements for the removal of residual water after the system (i.e., water jacket, etc.) has been repaired. These elements fit into our normal housing unit and can be used for emergency situations to absorb up to 30 oz. of water.

The regular Filtroil element consists of rolled filtering paper made from a dense cellulose fiber (C6H10O5). This natural fiber contains a variety of water absorbent hydroxyl groups making it excellent for the removal of moisture.

ACID BUILD-UP
Acids, most commonly sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid, are primarily caused by the slow formation of chemical acid groups in the hydraulic oil. Although oil additives slow this process, the continuous removal of virtually all moisture and particulate contamination significantly reduces the supply of chemical, physical and catalytic building blocks necessary for acid formation. Filtroil does not affect additives in solution or remove the largest of additive particles of 1/100 micron.

Filtroil limits the acidity of oil continuously at a total acid number (TAN) of 0.1 to 1.5, depending on oil specifications. Manufacturers normally recommend oil change at TAN 2.0 or above.

OXIDATION
Oxidation is the chemical bonding of the oil itself with oxygen. As oil oxidizes, the physical properties change and oil loses its lubricity (i.e., its lubricating qualities).

This process occurs in two ways in hydraulic systems.

Rapid oxidation occurs when hydraulic oil is "cooked" in an overheated situation normally brought about by inadequate cooling or an improperly functioning system. Cooked oil is a dirty brown color and machine parts look "varnished." Filtroil cannot directly solve major overheating problems. Once the oil has been totally destroyed by overheating, Filtroil cannot restore it to the original condition, but by removing particulates we do reduce the internal temperature by 4° F to 7° F.

Normal long-term oxidation occurs due to the exposure of oil to oxygen entering through breather caps, make-up oil, and system moisture. Without overheating problems, Filtroil will extend the life of your oil at least 7 to 10 years. Filtroil is able to help both the short-term and long-term situations by reducing the internal operating temperatures by 4° F to 7° F. In addition, Filtroil removes oxidation products and other particles which have the potential of being catalysts for further oxidation.

VISCOSITY FLUCTUATION
Viscosity fluctuation is the result of the oil degradation conditions listed above.

Filtroil has attacked the first three reasons for oil deterioration in a direct fashion and has significantly slowed down the process of the fourth. By maintaining cleaner than new oil, viscosity is kept at ±15% of new oil. Removing contaminants, such as oxides and water, Filtroil eliminates the major mechanical causes of lower viscosity and extends the life of the viscosity preservers added by oil manufacturers. These additives are not removed and can continue to fulfill their purpose.

FILTROIL BOTTOM LINE
Under normal operating conditions, using periodic oil analysis as a barometer, adding reasonable amounts of "make up oil" (5 to 10%) and barring major long-term cooking, Filtroil can maintain hydraulic oil systems 2 to 5 grades cleaner than new oil.
